OUR HISTORY

Friendship is said to have started around 1866 shortly after the Civil War. It began as a part of Bethel Church, which was ethnically a white church. Records show that in 1873 there was a Revival held wherein thirteen souls were converted. Those thirteen individuals are considered to be the founding members of Friendship. At that time Reverend Jennings (pastor of Bethel) would deliver a sermon to the White congregation in the morning and the African American congregation in the afternoon. The African American congregation requested a separation. In 1875 separation from Bethel Baptist was granted and Friendship Baptist Church was Chartered. The Name was chosen by Brother Romalus Collins, because people labored so friendly and harmoniously during the establishment of the church.
